LIST PICK
TALL JUAN TALKING TO MYSELF
Tall Juan picks apart comfort and isolation as he confides within himself on ‘Talking To Myself’. The Argentinian-born musician, now based in New York, glides through sounds that can range anywhere from Cumbia to garage. Through his music, he reaches into himself to address deeply personal issues with an artistic eye. ‘Talking To Myself’ is the second single from Juan’s third LP Raccoon Nights, due next month. As the song begins, a phone line trills and an unexpected voice comes through - Mac DeMarco. Despite the name of the track indicating a lonely perspective, reaching out to a friend was crucial to its development, as Juan has explained. “I needed a friend to sing with me and create a musical dialogue, so I reached out to Mac. Singing together brought the concept to life.” Fitting with the slack blend of warm riffs and a stumbling drum groove, Demarco cooly brings in the first verse: ‘What’s up? What’s good? What’s going on? / If you even know what is wrong.’ The chorus comes in like an empathetic word from a friend. ‘I know what you are going through / I feel the same way, you know I do.’ Despite having someone reaching out, Juan is stuck in a bleary echo chamber of his own subduing thoughts. The eerie Butoh-inspired music video does incredibly well to depict the paralysing experience of being trapped within yourself as friends witness your struggle. Juan is able to show the connection that comes from one phone call piercing through, and the drive to escape his paralysed state when he does. The track has a warm and jangly feeling to it, offering a sense of deeply felt understanding and support to listeners as Juan pours out his own experience of being lost in such a debilitating mindset. Raccoon Nights will be out on 6th September via Atlantico Records. -Kayla Sandiford
